How to fold a paper crane with flapping wings

Steps

  1. 1
Start with a square sheet of paper. You can buy square pieces of origami or scrapbook paper at a craft store, or you can make a square out of regular copy paper. Fold an A4 (or 8.5" by 11") sheet of paper diagonally so you make a right triangle and remove the excess rectangle paper at the bottom, as shown in the illustration. If using single-sided colored paper, start with the paper white-side up and fold the triangle so that the colored side shows.

  2. 2
Put four creases in your square. Fold the square diagonally both ways (if you had to make your paper a square, you've already done one of these folds) and unfold. Now you should have a nice "X" shape. Fold the paper in half length-wise and unfold, then width-wise and unfold You should have four creases running through your paper that all intersect in the middle of the square.

  3. 3
Make a square base. Orient the square so that one of the corners is facing you. In each of the four quadrants of the page, you should be able to see a square made up of two triangles. Locate the square in the corner facing you. Then, in the squares pointing to the right and left, find the bottom triangles. You'll fold these triangles over the triangles in the square facing you. As you do this, you'll notice the paper "collapsing" into a square base. The top and bottom squares should remain intact, while the side squares fold. The result should look like the photo at right.

  4. 4
Fold the square into a kite shape. Make sure that the open side of the square (that can unfold to reveal the interior folds) is facing you. Grab one of the lower sides of the square, and fold it toward the crease running down the center, lining up the edge of the paper with the crease as accurately as you can. Do the same to the other side of the square. Flip over your paper, and make the same two folds on the other side. You'll notice that you have a triangle sitting on top of your folds. Bend it forward and backward along its bottom line to create a crease.

  5. 5
Make the bird base. Unfold the sides of the "kite" on the side of the paper facing you. Turn the shape "inside out" by lifting one of the open sides halfway up. Push in the crease you made along the bottom of the triangle that once sat on top of the kite. This should "pop" the new triangle into place along the creases you've already made. The resulting diamond should be long and thin. Fold over and do to the other side of the "kite."

  6. 6
Do the book fold. You should be able to move the two bottom parts of the diamond, with the bottom corner of the diamond facing you. Grab the corner on the right, and fold it over to the left corner of the diamond, performing a book fold. Flip the paper over and do the same thing.

  7. 7
Fold up the tail and head of the bird. Grab the bottom corner of the diamond and fold up, creasing in the center of the diamond. Do the same fold on the other side. Do another book fold, folding the right side of the triangle facing you over the left half of the triangle. Do another book fold on the other side of the paper. The head and tail portions that you folded up should now be between the two outward-facing triangles.

  8. 8
Angle the head and tail out. Grab one of the head or tail triangles (it doesn't matter which) and, maintaining the folds, angle it outward and downward. Line it up with the paper that begins to emerge from the bottom of the triangle, such that the slope of the head (or tail) aligns perfectly with the small triangle beneath the main triangle. (See the photo for help.) Do this to the other head or tail fold as well. You'll end up with a shape that looks like a crown.

  9. 9
Fold down the head. Pick which one of these pieces that you want to be a head. Slightly open the fold in the "head" side, and pull the top of the triangle down an inch or two. Angle the point outward, then crease.

  10. 10
Fold down the wings. You should notice a short, wide triangle between the wings of the bird. Note the corner of the triangle close to the tail, and fold your wing down so that the crease in the wing runs from this corner upward toward the neck of the bird. Do this to the other side as well.
  11. 11
Flap the wings. Pinch the base of the bird beneath the head portion, then move the tail back and forth to flap the wings.
  12. 12
    Finished.
